**Summary of Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) Expansion**
**Overview**
The Ministry of Home Affairs, through a statement by Minister of State Shri Bandi Sanjay Kumar in the Rajya Sabha, has outlined the current status and planned expansion of Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) across India.
**Existing Infrastructure**
India currently operates seven functional CFSLs. These facilities are located in:
* Chandigarh
* Delhi
* Kamrup (Assam)
* Kolkata (West Bengal)
* Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
* Pune (Maharashtra)
* Hyderabad (Telangana)
All seven existing laboratories are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), a requirement fulfilled once a facility is fully operationalized.
**National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES)**
Under the NFIES, the government has approved the establishment of seven additional CFSLs to strengthen the nation's forensic capabilities.
* **Total Outlay:** ₹860.3 crore.
* **Approved Locations:** Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
* **Land Allotment Status:** Land has already been allotted by respective state governments in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Khordha (Odisha), and Chengalpattu (Tamil Nadu).
**Additional Approvals**
Beyond the NFIES project, an additional CFSL has been approved for Samba in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir with a dedicated total outlay of ₹99.9 crore.

Currently 07 (seven) Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) are existing in the country and are
located at Chandigarh, Delhi, Kamrup (Assam), Kolkata (West Bengal), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Pune
(Maharashtra), and Hyderabad (Telangana). Under the National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement
Scheme (NFIES) establishment of 07 new CFSLs have been approved in Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Odisha,
Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan at a total outlay of ₹860.3 crore. So far,
land has been allotted by the respective State Governments in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Khordha (Odisha),
and Chengalpattu (Tamil Nadu). In addition to the above, another CFSL in Samba (UT of Jammu &
Kashmir) has been approved at a total outlay of ₹99.9 crore.
The existing 07 CFSLs are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration
Laboratories (NABL). A laboratory is accredited only when it is operationalized.
