1.7 “Final Grade Point Average” (FGPA) is the final index of a student at the time of the award of a degree.
1.8 “Final Grade” is the letter equivalent assigned to a student on the basis of his/her final grade point at the time of the
award of the degree.
1.9 The final grade point average of students in the courses is worked out on the basis of the formula indicated below:
ci = Credit of the ith course
gi = Grade point secured by the student in the ith course
n = total number of courses for which the student has registered.
2. Eligibility and Intake for Admission to the Programme of Study
A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the programme of study leading to the Degree of Master of Philosophy
(M.Phil.) hereinafter called the programme, if he/she had taken Masters' degree of the University or a degree recognized
by the University for this purpose as its equivalent with at least 55% marks in the concerned or allied subject. Statutory
relaxation for SC/ST and PWD candidate will be made available as per Govt. of India guidelines from time to time.

Provided, however, that the cases of students who have passed their examinations outside the Indian Universities system
and who may not have obtained a Master's degree may be considered for admission to the Programme, subject to their
equivalence as adjudged by the AIU Foreign Universities Degree Equivalence list.
The number of seats vacant for integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. Programme will notified by the University.
3. Procedure for Admission
The procedure for admission to the programme shall be laid down from time to time by the Admissions Committee
subject to approval by the Academic Council.
4. Registration
Registration of courses is the sole responsibility of a student. No student shall be allowed to do a course without
registration and no student shall be entitled to any credits in the course unless he/she has been formally registered for the
course by the scheduled date to be announced by the University.
5. Courses of Study
The School/Centre shall prescribe the course(s) and specify the methodology and instructional devices to be used. Every
such course shall carry such credits as may be assigned to it by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the
Centre/CASR/School Board.
A student clears a course only if he/she has participated in the sessional work and has secured an overall grade ‘D’ in that
course (for courses having no end semester examination) or has participated in the sessional work and appeared in the
end semester examination (for courses having semester examination) and secured a weighted grade ‘D’ in that course.
Provided, however, that a student may with the permission of Centre concerned, be allowed to add or substitute course(s)
within the period of three weeks from the commencement of the semester.
Provided further that a student may, with the permission of School/Centre concerned, be allowed to drop course(s) latest
by the dates prescribed by the Academic Council for Monsoon and Winter Semesters.
No student shall be allowed to add, substitute and/or drop a course after these deadlines.
6. Duration of the Programme
The M.Phil. course work shall be spread over two semesters in such a way that at least 50% of the total course work shall
be completed in the first semester. No candidate shall be permitted to submit his/her dissertation for the M.Phil. degree
unless he/she has pursued M.Phil. programme for not less three semesters after his/her admission to M.Phil.-Ph.D.
integrated programme and that he/she has successfully completed all the required credits through course work. The
candidate shall be allowed to submit his/her dissertation latest by the completion of the fourth semester.
Provided that a semester may be declared zero semester(s) in the case of a student if he/she could not continue with the
academic programme during that period due to illness and hospitalization or due to accepting a foreign scholarship/
fellowship leading to his/her absence from the University. Such zero semester(s) shall not be counted for calculation of
duration of the programme in case of such a student.
Provided further that in case of a foreign student who is compelled to leave the programme in between for getting their
student visa/research visa extended, such period shall not be counted for the purpose of calculation of duration of the
programme.
