SANCTIONED POSTS FOR IAS/IPS IN CHANDIGARH
2533. SHRI MANISH TEWARI:
Will the Minister of HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) the total number of sanctioned posts for IAS and IPS officers in the Union
Territory of Chandigarh as per the Indian Administrative Service (Fixation of
Cadre Strength) Amendment Regulations, 2025;
(b) the total number of IAS and IPS officers currently posted in Chandigarh
including those occupying ex-cadre or temporary positions;
(c) the number of IAS and IPS officers on deputation from the Governments
of Punjab and Haryana currently serving in Chandigarh;
(d) the rationale for maintaining such a large number of senior officers in
Chandigarh, particularly when adjoining districts like Panchkula and Mohali
operate with significantly leaner administrative structures; and
(e) whether the Government proposes to review and rationalise the
bureaucratic framework in Chandigarh to ensure administrative efficiency
and fiscal prudence and if so, the details thereof?

(a): As per the existing respective Cadre Strength Regulations, 11 posts of
the IAS and 7 posts of the IPS are sanctioned for the Union Territory of
Chandigarh.-2-

(b) & (c): As on date, 12 IAS officers and 9 IPS officers are posted in the
Union Territory of Chandigarh. Out of this, 3 officers of the IAS and 1 officer
of the IPS of Punjab cadre, and 2 officers of the IAS and 1 officer of the IPS
of Haryana cadre are posted in the Union Territory of Chandigarh on
deputation basis.
(d) & (e): The number of officers required for smooth transaction of
business is determined based on functional requirements of the Union
Territory of Chandigarh, and is a dynamic process. At present, no proposal
for review or rationalisation of the cadre strength and composition of the
AGMUT Cadre, including the Union Territory of Chandigarh, is under
consideration in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
